SPACE-FRAME and ALUMINIUM

The revolutionary concept applied to all GRECAV vehicles is the Safety Cell also known as “SPACE-FRAME”.

In the car industry the term "SPACE-FRAME" identifies a chassis shaped as a spatial structure, which forms the vehicle body’s skeleton. SONIQUE is built on a space-frame made of extruded tubular aluminium elements plus moulded aluminium sheets , linked to each other by solid welding knots.


The main advantages offered by such a “SPACE-FRAME” constructive solution are:
  • Limitation of vehicle mass
  • Increase of structural strength
  • Dramatic increase of energy absorption following to a collision , in comparison to a traditional steel structure
  • Aluminium Recycling

Grecav is the sole manufacturer of mini cars able to produce a "SPACE-FRAME" type structure

The whole bodywork is made of aluminium panelling and is treated against corrosion with a painting cycle exactly reproducing that used in the car industry such as: pre-treatment with zinc-manganese, cataphoresis and double coat of paint, enamel finishing.

VIRTUAL AND EXPERIMENTAL TESTS

With the aim of witnessing of the extraordinary properties of its safety cell, Grecav, of its own and free will, let its mini cars undergo several car crash tests although they are not mandatory by the rules of law in force for this category of vehicles. The characteristics of the aluminium space frame proved to be excellent in terms of structural strength and extraordinary absorption of the energy developed by a crash.

The checks carried out on the manikins have shown the great performance of the mini car structure in terms of excellent absorption of the crash energy, which makes it suitable and effective to protect the passengers in case of front crash.

Undergone a violent collision, EKE has proven to be a safe vehicle ‘cause it’s still possible to open the doors, the windshield is undamaged, THE INTERNAL STRUCTURE IS UNDAMAGED AND THE COMPARTMENT HAS NOT SHRUNK.

The series of pictures highlights the excellent robustness and flexibility of the aluminium body as well of the internal structure; as a matter of fact, when undergoing a lateral collision , the vehicle moves towards the shove direction and the load cannot enter the compartment.

After the tests performed with the former EKE, GRECAV wanted also the latter SONIQUE to undergo a front crash simulation, that took place at an accredited research Institute.

The checks performed on several sites of the bodywork and on many other car’s components, turned out to be extremely important in supporting our designers for the unceasing improvement of the product.
The simulation allowed to study the repartition of the strength over the solid welded knots, which are a guarantee for passengers ‘ safety (see the arrows in the picture)
Sonique did once more confirm the properties of solidity and flexibility common to all mini cars by GRECAV.
